HELLO FRIENDS, READERS, & TUMBLR-COMMUNITY IN GENERAL!
my brother and i are embarking on an art-research adventure, but we need YOUR SUPPORT to make it happen! a little bit about our project:
Like many Filipino families, ours carries living memories stretching back to the handover at the end of Spanish-American war, through the Japanese Occupation during WWII, the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos and the People Power Revolution, the Asian Financial Crisis, and more contemporaneous pressures that have scattered Filipinos across the globe in search of better ways of living.
For men and women of our generation, the ongoing impact of these events is gradually being forgotten as elders take their stories to the grave and migrant Filipinos adopt the narratives of their new home nations.
We would like to use our own family history as a case study and point of entry for questions that we have about a postcolonial inheritance of longing, belonging, and loving. We want the chance to ask: what are the threads that bind us together, across space and time?
We need your help to begin a period of generative investigation, starting this summer. The histories we will discover and record have huge impact and importance—primary sources of Filipino life during and after Japanese occupation are few and far between.
Besides academic potential, this trip holds personal and sentimental importance for both of us. We have not seen our family in the Philippines, including our 13 year old brother, for at least three years now. Because our family history is Filipino history, we want to learn it all and find a beautiful and meaningful way to preserve our stories.
We are reaching out to you to help support a summer of research in the Philippines, where we will be visiting sites, collecting stories, and laying the groundwork for what will be a novel based loosely on our family history.
please, please, PLEASE visit our indiegogo for the full story, and support if you can! donations, reblogs, and shares are all encouraged and appreciated! thank you so much.
UPDATE: HELLO FRIENDS! we are past the $1,000 mark which means that i am so SO close to being able to purchase a plane ticket to see my family and baby brother! please please please check out my campaign to support and/or share! so full of love & excitement on this day
